Difference between robots and automation

At first view, besides of classic industrial automation with PLC, robots are also a form of automation. This is true in terms of purpose: performing task automatically.

The second criterion, however, is the way the task is performed. Robot are comprised of manipulator (body) and control unit specialized in mathematical computing of movement matrix and final trajectory of robot arm, but robot manufacturers design own programming language.

Instead, PLCs, regardless of the manufacturers have developed internationally recognized programming language according to the IEC 61131-3 standard, which represents the control unit of any automation.

While robots are optimized for movements, PLCs are specialized in the acquisition of signals and numerical calculations, integrating with any actuators.
